Bullet Pillars in Orion
NASA APOD · Gemini Observatory
COSMIC MESSAGE
In the Orion Nebula, bullets of gas, each about the size of our solar system, shoot out at 400 kilometers per second from a central source called IRc2. Discovered in 1983, these bullets are very young, typically less than 1,000 years old. As they tear through the nebula, a small amount of iron gas causes their tips to glow blue.
