Light Pillars Over Inner Mongolia

These are not auroras, but nearby light pillars, a phenomenon typically much closer to the ground. Light pillars are columns of light appearing to extend up from a light source. They are caused by flat, fluttering ice crystals reflecting light from the upper atmosphere. In freezing temperatures, these ice crystals can form near the ground, creating pillars from artificial lights.
