The Changing Ion Tail of Comet Pons-Brooks

A comet's ion tail changes based on several factors. These include the rate of material ejection from the nucleus, the strength and complexity of the solar wind, and the comet's rotation. This sequence of images, taken over nine days, shows the marked changes in Comet 12P/Pons, Brooks' ion tail. On some days, it was long and complex; on others, less so.
