On the right, the Pleiades, or Seven Sisters, glow blue with reflected starlight. This open cluster, also known as M45, contains over 3,000 stars and is about 400 light years away. On the left, the California Nebula, NGC 1499, shines red from hydrogen emission. It is a large molecular cloud, roughly 1,000 light years from us.
