Cygnus Loop Supernova Shockwave
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
Fifteen thousand years ago, a star in Cygnus exploded. This image from the Hubble Space Telescope shows a portion of the shockwave from that supernova, still expanding past nearby stars. The collision of this gaseous shockwave with a stationary gas cloud heats the gas, causing it to glow in an array of colors known as the Cygnus Loop.
