Neptune: Big Blue Giant

This image of Neptune was taken by the Voyager 2 spacecraft in 1989, the only mission to visit the planet. Neptune, like Uranus, is composed mostly of liquid water, methane, and ammonia, surrounded by a thick gas atmosphere. It is the farthest planet from the Sun until 1999, when Pluto's orbit will temporarily bring it closer. Voyager 2 provided our first close-up look at this distant blue giant.
