What formed Ariel's valleys? This question arose when Voyager 2 passed this moon of Uranus in January 1986. Speculation suggests that ancient tidal heating from Uranus caused moonquakes and massive shifts in the moon's surface. A huge network of sunken valleys covers this frozen moon, with some unknown material coating the bottoms of many channels. Ariel is the second closest moon to Uranus, after Miranda.
