Atlantis Approaches Mir

The Space Shuttle Atlantis approached the Mir space station during a mission that concluded two days prior to this image. Mir, which was ten years old at the time, was equipped for scientific experiments in astronomy, physics, materials, biology, and chemistry. The top module is an unmanned supply ship, while the next module with the long boom carries telescopes and essential flight equipment, connecting to the core living quarters.
