The Ion Tail of Comet Hyakutake

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

This picture of Comet Hyakutake, taken on March 14, 1996, clearly shows structure in its ion tail. An ion tail forms as a comet nears the Sun, when sunlight causes gas and dust to boil off the nucleus. Charged gas, or ions, are then accelerated away by the solar wind. The ion tail appears blue and glows by fluorescence.
