A Dust Jet From Hale-Bopp

Comet Hale-Bopp, approaching the inner Solar System, is heated by sunlight, increasing its production of dust and gas. The icy nucleus is hidden within the coma, the surrounding cloud of dust and gas. Using a 2.2-meter telescope at the European Southern Observatory, astronomers detected an enormous jet of dust extending northward from the nucleus. These dust jets may come from vents on the comet's surface.
