COSMIC MESSAGE
This tiny, carrot-shaped track, only about five hundredths of an inch long, records the passage of a micrometeoroid through aerogel. The aerogel was exposed to space by the EURECA spacecraft, launched by the Space Shuttle. The meteoroid itself, roughly a thousandth of an inch in diameter, rests at the tip of the track. Scientists analyze such interplanetary dust particles to learn about the composition of comets and other celestial bodies.
