COSMIC MESSAGE

The Whirlpool Galaxy, M51, is a classic spiral galaxy about 15 million light years distant. Its spiral structure is likely due to gravitational interaction with a smaller galaxy. The smaller galaxy, visible above and to the right, is actually behind M51. Dust in M51's spiral arm blocks some of the light from this background galaxy.
