The Lyman Alpha Forest

NASA APOD · J. Shalf, Y. Zhang (UIUC) et al., GCCC
COSMIC MESSAGE

The universe contains clouds of hydrogen gas, forming what astronomers call the Lyman-alpha forest. These gas clouds absorb light from distant quasars, leaving distinct absorption lines in their spectra. Distant quasars show more absorption, suggesting the early universe was a thicker Lyman-alpha thicket.
