COSMIC MESSAGE

Astronomers often find unexpected objects, like the "mystery object" circled in this photograph from the Second Palomar Observatory Sky Survey. It looked star-like but had unusual colors. Further study revealed it to be a Broad Absorption Line (BAL) quasar, a rare type of active galactic nucleus. These quasars have strong absorption lines in their spectra, caused by gas surrounding the central black hole.
