Mir Flares Farewell

NASA APOD · Paulo Raymundo (Salvador, Brazil)
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Russian Mir space station makes a final pass through the evening sky above Salvador, Brazil, in this time exposure. The image, a 5-minute, 20-second exposure, shows setting stars leaving short, almost vertical trails. The rapidly moving Mir travels horizontally, trailing toward the left, or south, edge of the picture. Reflecting sunlight from low Earth orbit, the historic space station made a final appearance before its planned deorbit.
