Spirals On Edge

NASA APOD · Robert Gendler
COSMIC MESSAGE

Spiral galaxies seen face-on display grand designs with graceful arms. When viewed edge-on, they look different, but are no less striking. Their central regions bulge, and dark cosmic dust lanes appear silhouetted against starlight from flattened galactic disks. This mosaic shows nine prominent edge-on spirals, including NGC2683, M104, and NGC4565.
