COSMIC MESSAGE
Today is a solstice, a new Moon, and Mars is at its closest approach since 1988. For those along the path of totality, it is also a total eclipse of the Sun, the first of the third millennium. This image, from the August 1999 total solar eclipse, captures the shimmering solar corona just before totality ends, a phenomenon known as the diamond ring effect.
