AE Aurigae: The Flaming Star

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

AE Aurigae, known as the "Flaming Star," is surrounded by what appears to be smoke, but this material is primarily interstellar hydrogen. The star, like others, generates energy through nuclear fusion, not by burning. Fire, which requires oxygen, is not relevant in the low-oxygen, high-energy environment of a star. The "smoke" also contains dark filaments of carbon-rich dust, silhouetted against the star's light.
