Nebula Nova Cygni Turns On

This nebula wasn't visible until 1992. That year, a white dwarf star in Cygnus exploded in a nova, an event called Nova Cygni 1992. The flash of light illuminated existing gas, exciting the hydrogen and making it glow red. The only gas actually expelled by the nova is a small red ball near the center of the photo.
