COSMIC MESSAGE
In 1984, astronaut Bruce McCandless made history as the first person to fly free in space without a tether. He used a Manned Maneuvering Unit, or MMU, which propelled him with jets of nitrogen. The MMU, weighing over 140 kilograms, allowed him to move around the Space Shuttle's cargo bay. This technology was later used for satellite deployment and retrieval.
