The Arms of NGC 4258

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

NGC 4258, also called M106, is a spiral galaxy about 21 million light-years away in Canes Venatici. This image combines visible and infrared light, showing the galaxy's sweeping spiral arms in yellow and red. However, X-ray and radio data reveal two additional spiral arms that do not align with the visible stars, gas, and dust. These extra arms are thought to be shock waves from a supermassive black hole at the galaxy's center.
