On September 1, 2007, the Aurigid meteor shower produced a predicted outburst. Astronomers flew at 47,000 feet to observe and record this event. This composite photo shows the bright, colorful streaks of the Aurigids. The shower's source is understood to be the comet Kiess, which last passed through the inner solar system in 1911.
