A new era of spaceflight began on July 24, 1950, with the launch of the first rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida. This was the Bumper V-2, an ambitious two-stage rocket combining a V-2 missile with a WAC Corporal rocket. Its upper stage reached record altitudes of nearly 400 kilometers.
