Geostationary Highway

NASA APOD · Babak Tafreshi
COSMIC MESSAGE

About 36,000 kilometers above the Earth, satellites can orbit once every 24 hours. If they are over the equator, they appear to hang motionless in the sky, a geostationary orbit. This allows them to always communicate with the same ground station. The result is a geostationary highway of communication satellites, as shown in this composite image.
