Dramatic prominences can loom just beyond the edge of the Sun. This image, taken in a specific color of light emitted by hydrogen, shows a giant prominence last week. The Sun is displaying increased activity as it comes off an unusually quiet Solar Minimum, with a changing carpet of hot gas visible in its chromosphere.
