Shell Galaxies in Pisces

NASA APOD · Stephen Leshin
COSMIC MESSAGE

In Pisces, about 100 million light-years away, two galaxies make up Arp 227: NGC 474 and NGC 470. NGC 474 is a peculiar shell galaxy, with faint, wide arcs. These shells might have formed from a gravitational encounter with its neighbor NGC 470, or from a merger with another galaxy.
