NGC 1499: The California Nebula

COSMIC MESSAGE

The California Nebula, NGC 1499, is a cosmic cloud that, by chance, resembles the outline of California. It drifts through the Orion Arm of the Milky Way, about 1,500 light-years from our Sun. This emission nebula is around 100 light-years long, and its prominent glow comes from the red light of hydrogen.
