Record Prominence Imaged by Solar Orbiter

Last month, the Sun produced the largest prominence ever imaged with a complete solar disk. The Solar Orbiter spacecraft captured this record image in ultraviolet light. A solar prominence is a cloud of hot gas held above the Sun's surface by its magnetic field. This one was enormous, spanning a length comparable to the Sun's diameter, and can erupt unpredictably, expelling hot gas into space.
