Red Aurora Over Australia

NASA APOD · Alex Cherney (Terrastro, TWAN)
COSMIC MESSAGE

Last week's solar storms, mostly from sunspot region 1402, caused a red aurora over Australia. Particles from the sun excited oxygen atoms high in Earth's atmosphere. When these atoms returned to their ground state, they emitted a red glow.
