PanSTARRS: The Anti Tail Comet

NASA APOD · Digital-Astronomy
COSMIC MESSAGE

Comet PanSTARRS (C/2011 L4) is now visible all night for northern hemisphere observers, though it requires telescopes as it fades. Earth recently passed through the comet's orbital plane, creating a remarkably long anti-tail. This anti-tail appeared when we viewed the broad, fanned-out dust tail edge-on, looking along its length as it trailed behind the comet. PanSTARRS is now heading for the outer solar system.
