Galaxy NGC 474: Shells and Star Streams

NASA APOD · P.-A. Duc (CEA, CFHT), Atlas 3D Collaboration
COSMIC MESSAGE

Galaxy NGC 474 shows multiple layers of shells, which are complex and unexpected for an elliptical galaxy. The cause is unknown, but they might be tidal tails from absorbed smaller galaxies. Another idea is that they are ripples from an ongoing collision with the spiral galaxy above it.
