The Milky Way Over Monument Valley

NASA APOD · Wally Pacholka
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Milky Way arches across the sky over Monument Valley, USA, in this 2012 photo. The iconic rock peaks, called buttes, are composed of hard rock that remained after water eroded softer surrounding rock. The closest butte on the left and the one to its right are known as the Mittens, with Merrick Butte further back.
