Alaskan Moondogs

NASA APOD · Sebastian Saarloos
COSMIC MESSAGE

Moonlight illuminates a snowy Alaskan landscape, creating an optical phenomenon called moondogs, or paraselenae. These bright spots appear on either side of the Moon, which is surrounded by an icy halo. Moondogs are formed when moonlight refracts through hexagonal ice crystals in the atmosphere. This image was captured in January 2013 from Lower Miller Creek, Alaska.
