COSMIC MESSAGE

M101, the Pinwheel Galaxy, is an enormous spiral galaxy, almost twice the size of our own Milky Way, at about 170,000 light-years across. It was one of the original spiral nebulae observed by Lord Rosse's 19th-century telescope. This modern telescopic view also includes spiky foreground stars within the Milky Way.
