Pillars of the Eagle Nebula in Infrared
Newborn stars are forming within the Eagle Nebula, specifically within these pillars of dense gas and dust. The intense radiation from these newly formed, bright stars is causing the surrounding material to erode away. This image, taken with the Hubble Space Telescope in near-infrared light, allows us to see through much of the thick dust that makes these pillars opaque in visible light. These giant structures are light-years in length and are informally known as the Pillars of Creation.
