Messier 24: Sagittarius Star Cloud

NASA APOD · Roberto Colombari
COSMIC MESSAGE

Unlike most objects in Charles Messier's catalog, M24 is not a single bright galaxy, star cluster, or nebula. It is a gap in nearby, obscuring interstellar dust clouds. This gap allows us to view distant stars in the Sagittarius spiral arm of our Milky Way galaxy. When you look at the Sagittarius Star Cloud, you are seeing through a window over 300 light-years wide, to stars 10,000 light-years or more from Earth.
