Moonrise doesn't usually look like this. The full moon is dark because it is passing through Earth's shadow. It appears red because red sunlight is preferentially refracted through Earth's atmosphere. The Moon also rises next to Mars, which is coincidentally nearly opposite the Sun. This striking view was captured over Rio.
