The Flame Nebula, 1,500 light-years away in Orion, glows like a billowing fire. The bright star Alnitak, the easternmost star in Orion's Belt, shines energetic light into the Flame. This light knocks electrons away from the great clouds of hydrogen gas that reside there, causing them to emit light.
