COSMIC MESSAGE
This 10-degree wide field of view in Cepheus the King shows the sprawling emission nebulae IC 1396 and Sh2-129. These nebulae are a mix of glowing interstellar gas and dark dust clouds. IC 1396 on the left is hundreds of light-years across and about 3,000 light-years distant, energized by its bluish central star. It contains intriguing dark shapes, like the Elephant's Trunk, which are tens of light-years long and hold raw material for new stars.
