The binary star system RS Ophiuchi experiences spectacular explosions every two decades or so. A red giant star dumps hydrogen onto its white dwarf companion. This triggers a thermonuclear explosion on the white dwarf's surface, causing the system to brighten dramatically and become visible to the unaided eye.
