Gravity's Grin

Gravitational lensing, predicted by Einstein, gives these distant galaxies a whimsical appearance. The Chandra and Hubble space telescopes captured this 'Cheshire Cat' galaxy group. The arcs you see are background galaxies whose light is bent by the gravity of the two large elliptical galaxies in the foreground. This effect allows us to study even more distant objects.
