The Long Wispy Tail of Comet R3 (PanSTARRS)

NASA APOD · Haythem Hamdi
COSMIC MESSAGE

Comet C/2025 R3 PanSTARRS has developed an impressive, wispy tail of glowing gas. The tail originates from a central nucleus of dirty ice, warmed by the Sun. As the nucleus releases gas, it forms a coma, and energetic sunlight ionizes this gas, pushing it away from the Sun to create the ion tail.
