Earth's Moon, A Familiar Face

This mosaic of Earth's Moon was compiled from images taken by the Clementine spacecraft in 1994. We always see the same face of the Moon because its rotation period matches its orbital period around Earth. This familiar face changes phase as the Moon orbits, creating the monthly lunar cycle.
