The Sun Erupts

In 1973, Skylab captured this image of the Sun throwing off one of the largest eruptive prominences ever recorded. The Sun is a seething ball of hot gas, about 5 billion years old, with another 5 billion years to go. Scientists are still working to understand phenomena like the extreme heat of its corona and its unusual magnetic field.
