Moonrise, Planet Earth

During the Astro-1 mission in 1990, Space Shuttle astronauts photographed this view of the full Moon rising above Earth's limb. The foreground shows towering clouds in the troposphere, the lowest layer of our atmosphere. Above, the blue stratosphere fades into the blackness of space. This image captures the strong visual elements of both the Moon and Earth's atmosphere.
