M101: The Pinwheel Galaxy

M101, the Pinwheel Galaxy, is a striking example of a spiral galaxy, located about 22 million light-years away. Recent evidence suggests that a close gravitational interaction with a neighboring galaxy created waves of high mass and condensed gas. These waves compress existing gas, triggering the formation of new stars, which gives M101 its prominent spiral arms.
