Comet Hale-Bopp Outbound

Comet Hale-Bopp, often called the Comet of the Century, is shown here as it left the inner Solar System in 1997. Traveling at about 12 miles per second, it was nearing the main asteroid belt. This false-color image, taken by a telescopic camera on the Space Shuttle Discovery, shows the comet's shrinking coma against a field of stars.
