Shocked by Supernova 1987a

Seven years after its explosion, Supernova 1987a's expanding debris is colliding with material it previously expelled. The collision creates a visible shock wave, seen as a yellow spot on the interior of the surrounding ring. Despite traveling at speeds of 60 million kilometers per hour, the vast distances involved make the event appear to unfold over years.
