Sparkling Star May Indicate Galactic Composition

Astronomers with the MACHO Collaboration noticed a star in the Small Magellanic Cloud twinkle slightly. The specific type of sparkling indicated a multiple-star microlensing event was in progress. Microlensing is a rare phenomenon where gravity deflects light so prominently that background sources appear to have their brightness amplified. This observation provides insights into the composition of the galaxy.
