Jupiters Rings Revealed

Jupiter's rings were discovered in 1979 by the Voyager 1 spacecraft. Recent data from the Galileo spacecraft confirmed that these rings were created by meteoroid impacts on small nearby moons. When a meteoroid strikes a moon like Adrastea, it vaporizes and explodes dirt and dust into Jovian orbit. This image shows an eclipse of the Sun by Jupiter, revealing the planet's faint rings.
